A visit to the potato farm

On Sunday 8th September, Towngate Fisheries owner Mark Drummond travelled to Ely, Suffolk to visit some of the farms where the potatoes used to make our chips are grown.

Over 100 fish and chip shop owners from around the UK attended the open day at Oak Tree Farm, the home of Isle of Ely Produce. The day included presentations about the industry, including one by Mark explaining all about Towngate Fisheries’ healthier menu choices.

Farmer Tony Lee showed us around his farm and gave a great talk about the challenges of growing top quality potatoes. We got to see the potatoes growing in the fields, the harvesters and equipment used to harvest the crop, the grading machinery that removes small potatoes as well as the stores where potatoes are kept over winter.
